Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele make stunning US Open history

The U.S. Open had never seen an opening round like Rickie Fowlerโ€™s.

And moments after he finished, Xander Schauffele managed to match him.

Both Fowler and Schauffele made history Thursday in the first round at the 2023 U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club, as they each shot 8-under 62 to set the record for the lowest round in the tournamentโ€™s history.

The 62s tie the record for the lowest round at any major; Branden Grace shot 62 at the 2017 British Open.

The 34-year-old Fowler, who started on the back nine, had five birdies over his first nine holes but also had a pair of bogeys.

He then drained five birdies on the front nine for the 62.

Schauffele, 29, also started on the back nine and managed a bogey-free round.

He had three birdies over his first nine holes and birdied three of his last four holes, including each of the last two, to match Fowler.

Both golfers are looking for their first major title.

Schauffele finished tied for second at the 2018 British Open and 2019 Masters, and finished tied for third at the 2019 U.S. Open.
