Steve Cohen wants to fill Mets’ president of baseball ops job

Mets owner Steve Cohen still wants to hire a president of baseball operations — but he’s not exactly in a rush.

Cohen mentioned his desire to hire someone for that position during his press conference Wednesday before the Mets’ game against the Brewers, and it’d be someone that would be above general manager Billy Eppler to make the franchise’s baseball decision.

Cohen and Eppler have had conversations about the owner’s desire to fill that role, and Eppler is “supportive” of that.

“If you want to hire great talent, they just don’t show up,” Cohen said. “I’ve been patient because I do not want to make a mistake, and so I can’t tell you if it’s gonna be this year. I don’t know. Is it gonna be next year? I don’t know. But at some point, that’s gonna happen.”

Though Cohen didn’t specifically mention any possible candidates for the position, he did acknowledge that he doesn’t want a “rookie.”

Brewers President of Baseball Operations David Stearns claps from the dugout
Signs have long pointed to David Stearns as a candidate for the Mets’ top baseball job.

The Post’s Jon Heyman had previously reported that the Mets’ pursuit of Brewers advisor — and former president of baseball operations — David Stearns could happen in the offseason.

Cohen reiterated that, in the end, “these are titles.”

He envisioned a complementary relationship between Eppler and the Mets’ future president of baseball operations, building on what he already considers to reflect a strong infrastructure.

“I’m taking my time,” Cohen said. “Hopefully, I’ll find the right person, and if I don’t find the right person this year, I’ll wait.”
