A hero FDNY firefighter who as soon as rescued a sufferer in a wheelchair from a burning constructing died after falling off his motorbike on the FDR Drive and being struck by a driver who didn’t stay on the scene, police mentioned.
Matthew Goicochea was using his 2023 Yamaha motorbike uptown on the parkway when he worn out close to E. ninth St. about 3:45 a.m. cops mentioned.

Medics rushed Goicochea to Bellevue Hospital, the place he died.
“We lost a true hero,” Deputy Mayor Kaz Daughtry posted on X. “His dedication to serving and protecting New Yorkers, including his heroic rescue of a fire victim in the Bronx that earned him the Thomas Wylie Medal last year, exemplifies the selflessness and courage that define all of New York’s Bravest.”
Goicochea joined the FDNY in September 2022, serving with Ladder Firm 41 within the Bronx.
In August 2023, Goicochea‘s firm was the primary to answer a 911 name a couple of hearth engulfing a six-story constructing in Morris Park. ”At nice private danger [Goicochea]’s fast and decisive actions led to the rescue, removing and immediate emergency medical care of this sufferer,” the FDNY report says.
Goicochea lived in Throgs Neck.
